about

I wrote this instrumental in 2011, after observing a monkseal having a leisurely afternoon swim at Kalaupapa.

I have re-recorded a new version as a bandcamp exclusive to help raise funds for the Kalaupapa Memorial. 100% of proceeds will go towards this. This will lead up to a virtual fundraising concert stream on 8/29/20.

From 1866 to 1969, nearly 8,000 men, women and children were taken from their families and forcibly isolated on the Kalaupapa peninsula, because of government policies regarding leprosy (now called Hansen’s disease). Over the years, their names and their places in history were mostly forgotten.

The Kalaupapa Memorial will change that. The Memorial will list and preserve the names of all those were sent to Kalaupapa and return people to the history that they helped to create. The Memorial will bring healing and pride to family members and descendants who will feel an instant connection to the name of their ancestor engraved on the Memorial.

The Memorial is the idea of the residents of Kalaupapa who want to make sure that they and all those who went before them are always remembered. Since 2003, Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa has been working on plans for the Memorial. Ka ‘Ohana successfully worked with the US Congress to pass the bill to establish the Memorial and developed a Memorial Committee that has created a design of the Memorial which has been roundly supported.

Ka ‘Ohana recently began our fundraising campaign for the Memorial only to see our efforts stalled by the Covid-19 outbreak. We are hoping this virtual concert can be the start to relaunch our efforts. We feel holding the concert on August 29, the birthday of prolific songwriter and Kalaupapa leader Bernard K. Punikai`a, which is the ideal way to honor him and all the musicians of Kalaupapa throughout the history.

Music has been a common refrain of Kalaupapa from the beginning until today, helping people facing difficult circumstances find healing, joy and community. Many people played music and composed mele, providing a inspiring soundtrack to this important history. We want to make sure these songs are forever preserved and their composers properly acknowledged.

We hope you will join us.
